HISTORICAL PRESERVATION ALTERNATIVE BREAK

I attended an alternative break with CMU during December 2016 for the social justice cause of historical preservation. We traveled to Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina to preserve and restore the Lewis-Thornburg Farm.

This home and farm was originally built in 1885, and has since gone through many renovations and additions, so our task was to restore the mail room within the home, and to rejuvenate the storage shed. The mail room was used as a part of the Underground Railroad, and during restoration we discovered old wallpaper behind cedar planks.

This trip combined teamwork and dedication to history to restore this registered historical site. For a small group of student volunteers, we were able to restore a room within the home, completely restore the storage shed through residing, reflooring, painting, and reinstalling tin siding, as well as help with minor touch-ups in other farm buildings for the National Forest.
